Lu Ban (507 – 440 BC) was an outstanding civil engineer, craftsman, and inventor in Chinese history. He was extremely skilled and very imaginative. The numerous tools he invented had greatly improved the productivity of tradesmen. Having been circulated for thousands of years, many of his tools are still in use, earning him great esteem. In China, he is worshiped as the Patron of carpenters and contractors. Lu Ban is the symbol of the great wisdom of Chinese working class.

Initiated by Tianjin Municipal Education Commission, the Lu Ban Workshop Project aims to apply the legacy of the Greatest Craftsman in Chinses history to

  • demonstrate to the world Tianjin’s vocational education expertise and innovative culture
  • enable the dialogues between the Vocational Education and Training sector in Tianjin with that in other countries
  • showcase and exchange vocational education resources from both sides

Established in 18th May 2017, British Lu Ban Workshop (LBW) is a joint venture between Tianjin No.2 School of Commerce and Chichester College Group, managed by PAM Education. Lu Ban Workshop provides physical and virtual learning platforms to facilitate the development and delivery of blended transnational learning programmes between the two countries. The first qualification that was developed through British Lu Ban Workshop initiative is the Level 3 Diploma in Chinese Culinary Arts, which officially confirmed that the Chinese teaching and assessment standards were recognised in the UK.

The programme will enable students in the UK worldwide to be trained in the authentic skills associated with traditional Chinese cuisine and will set new quality standards within the hospitality and catering sector. The blended learning programme will be delivered online and in association with the Chichester College Group from September 2018.
