Liverpool’s Brewery Village has been chosen as the location for a £2.2m restaurant due to open at the former Cains Brewery site this Autumn.

Lu Ban Liverpool, which will create more than 30 jobs including apprenticeships, will specialise in regional Chinese food, with authentic recipes and techniques from the Tianjin region, home of the famous Tianjin School of Cuisine.

The restaurant, which will transform a section of the brewery located in Baltic Triangle, says it will be one of the city’s most unique dining venues with an exquisite array of dining options and a menu that will feature small plates, tasting menus and Tianjin banquets.

Lu Ban Liverpool directors Mike Mounfield and David Hughes – who was previously managing director of Signature Living and general manager for Sanguine Hospitality which included brands Doubletree by Hilton, Hotel Indigo Liverpool and Marco Pierre White Liverpool – are keeping certain features of the restaurant under wraps until its grand launch later this year.

Mounfield, a chef with decades of experience in the industry, said: “What we are creating here is an aspirational restaurant like no other in the city.

“This won’t be your ‘traditional’ Chinese restaurant, Lu Ban Liverpool is going to be something very different.

“This is very much about regional specialities from one of the finest region’s for cuisine in China.

“The chefs from Tianjin are world renowned for the quality of the food and this is what we are replicating here.”

The restaurant interiors have been designed by Liverpool designer Angela Rawson, who has mixed quintessential elements of Chinese art and culture with the raw industrial heritage of the brewery, for a modern but sympathetic feel.

Mounfield added: “Angela has taken our brief and transformed it into our vision. Our aim, given the significant investment, was to ensure that this is a stunning and desirable venue to come and dine.

“There are certain elements that we want to keep secret until the launch later in the year, which I expect will be incredibly popular once people know the experiences they can come and have here.”

Work has begun on transforming the building into the UK’s first Lu Ban restaurant, which is expected to open in the Autumn.

The directors are currently in the process of securing an executive head chef and general manager for the restaurant, with staff recruitment expected to commence in the coming weeks.

The restaurant will be working alongside the Lu Ban Association, which is actively promoting Chinese culinary Arts in the UK and delivering the next generation of restaurant teams.
